Remember the time you went to a video rental store and only wanted to
rent Hong Kong movies and US action movies? Movies with Bruce Lee,
Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Carter Hwang, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven
Seagal, Jeff Speakman, Gary Daniels etc etc? Those were great times. It
was something different from the mainstream movies. Then the VHS rental
stores went out of business and the DVD and streaming came up. Gone
were the days of action movies, were it not for Jason Statham and
Scott Adkins. Scott Adkins was considered a B-movie actor, while Statham
was seen as an A-movie actor. Scott made one movie after another and
there was not one movie of his that didn’t have some awesome action.
Scott worked hard and I was wishing that the quality of his movies
improved. And improve they did. Since most of you hardly bother to watch
a Scott Adkins movie, now is the time to earn some street cred as a movie
fan. Pay attention. These are Scott Adkins’ best movies, that deserve a lot
of respect.
El Gringo
Scott was already badass in movies, before El Gringo, but El Gringo is
the movie that started to made Scott Adkins click as more than an action
movie star. He showed some great comedic skills in this movie, that is
a comedy that reminds me a bit of Desperado in a way, but then with
bundles of laughs due to weird and wacky characters that Scott Adkins
meets in this movie. Sofia Sisniega plays such a wacky character, but
there are a lot of other people too. This is one of Scott’s funniest
adventure movies and I wonder if he ever thought of a sequel. Super
underrated movie, that deserves a lot of respect.
The Debt Collector
Buddy movies were dead since the Rush Hours. It seems that genre
totally disappeared from the face of the earth. That was until The Debt
Collector got released. Scott Adkins and Louis Mandylor teamed up to
make a hilarious buddy movie with lots of jokes and action. It was the
team up we didn’t think we needed, but it delivered big time. It also helped
that Tony Todd played a bad guy. Louis Mandylor had some comedic
chops I didn’t know he had. Scott Adkins proved his comedic shops in
El Gringo, but then even got better in The Debt Collector. Adkins and
Mandylor did a sequel, that was enjoyable but not as good as the OG
Colletor. I still hope they make a third one, because Adkins and Mandylor
are an awesome duo.
Accident Man
Accident Man is a comic movie done right. Something Disney could learn
a lot from. Scott Adkins bought the rights to make a movie about the comic
and made it even better than the comic. This is another movie in which
Scott Adkins shows his comedic chops, but also his creative as an action
star. Not to mention there are a lot of wacky characters in this movie too
and Adkins and Michael Jai White meet again, from the second Undisputed
movie, to give us a good fight. I still want to see a buddy movie by Scott
Adkins and Michael Jai White. I think that one would be hilarious. Accident
Man delivered action and a special mention needs to go out to Amy Johnston,
who played a nasty bitch, who gives Scott’s character a run for his money.
Just a great movie.
Triple Threat
Triple Threat is what the Expendables should have been. Of course,
Scott showed in this movie how it is done. He got Tony Jaa, Michael Jai
White, Tiger Chen, Jeeja Yanin, Iko Uwais and Michael Bisping together
to give us great fights. And although I don’t consider Michael Bisping to
be an action star he certainly delivered in this movie too.
Boyka Undisputed (Undisputed 4)
Up till this point Scott Adkins had 2 signature roles. He was Boyka and
he was Mike Fallon (Accident Man). Since Undisputed 2 Adkins played
the role of Yuri Boyka, a badass Russian, who was the villain but turned
into an anti-hero. Boyka Undisputed was the redemption story of Boyka
and it was fantastic. Yuri Boyka might be the baddest character in
cinema after this movie.
Avengement
Avengement brought Scott Adkins his 3rd signature role, which is Cain
Burgess. The look of the character is badass, and he is one violent
motherfucker. Well, if you look at what happens to him in the movie, you
understand why he becomes that violent and swears revenge and makes
sure he gets it. This is Scott’s most violent movie with an absolutely
riveting character. You want to see him fuck up scum. Now that I think of it,
Cain Burgess might equal Yuri Boyka in badassness. He is that good. Make
another sequel, damnit
Accident Man 2
Accident Man 2 was even better than Accident Man, however they are 2
very different movies. While part 1 was funny, part 2 was even funnier
and had crazier characters. And the vibe was totally different in part 2. I
think it is partially because it was filmed in Malta, that was a
great location and was very sunny, which made the movie quite bright.
Accident Man part 1 was dark with typical English weather. Scott Adkins
got a sidekick and admitted it was based on Pink Panther (Clouseau and Kato)
and the woman was just too funny. They were a great combo. I can’t wait
until they make an Accident Man 3. The biggest crime for this movie was
the fact that it was not released in the theatres. This movie deserved a
spot in the theatres, because theatres don’t have funny movies anymore.
Scott Adkins got robbed here. And it wasn’t the first time (Debt Collectors,
Triple Threat).
Now go watch those movies! You know you want to.
